Goals:

Preparing your Print Head Shield for Installation

To prepare the Print Head Shield for installation on your Mark Two printer:

  1. Make sure you have the top side facing up. The top side has the larger diagonal cut on the right side.

  2. Fold the lower 3 tabs in all the way and press hard on the folds. When released, the flaps should be almost perpendicular to the sheet. Curl the longer section up.

Installing your Print Head Shield

You will need the following items from your Mark Two kit:

  • Plastic nozzle torque wrench
  • Fiber nozzle wrench
  • 2mm and 2.5mm hex wrenches
  • Tweezers

To install your Print Head Shield to your Mark Two printer:

  1. Move the print head to the middle of the printer.
  2. Select "Utilities" from the menu in the upper right corner of your printer's touch screen.
  3. Select "Temperature Control" from the list of menu options. Set both nozzles to heat up.
  4. Remove fiber nozzle.
  5. Turn off the printer and let it cool.
  6. Remove the white Axon cable clip by pulling it away from the print head.

  7. Remove the Axon cable by pinching the tabs on the top and bottom of the connector and pulling.
  8. Use the 2mm Allen wrench, remove the 2 PCB screws and discard them.
Note: Some PCB screws may require a 2.5mm Allen wrench.

  9. Put the shield washer on the Plastic nozzle.

  10. With the shield's 3 tabs facing up, slip the shield on the bottom of the print head. Make sure each of the tabs are tucked in under the sheet metal and the longer section is behind the PCB.
Note: You may have to push the white insulation up into the print head.

  11. Apply anti-seize to the new fiber nozzle and install with PTFE tube and Plastic nozzle. Ensure that the shield washer is loosely aligned with the shield.

  12. Make sure the fiber nozzle is sitting flush to the heater block and that it is not pinching the shield. Tighten the fiber nozzle, ensuring there are no open gaps.

  13. Use the 2.5mm Allen wrench to install the replacement screws with the retaining washers in the PCB holes to constrain the shield.
Note: Push the shield up while tightening the screws to prevent the shield from sagging and interfering with prints.

  14. Reinstall the Axon cable and clip.
  15. Turn on the printer.
  16. Select "Utilities" from the menu in the upper right corner of your printer's touch screen.
  17. Select "Temperature Control" from the list of menu options. Set both nozzles to heat up.
  18. When the Plastic nozzle is up to heat, use the torque wrench to tighten it until you feel the nozzle pop into place.
  19. Load Plastic and fiber
  20. Run the "Level Bed" routine.
  21. Discard any remaining fiber nozzles as they are not compatible with the new shield.
